FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
When Do I Need to Undergo an Occupational Health Examination?
Occupational health examinations must be performed before starting a new job (pre-employment examinations), after an absence due to illness lasting more than 30 days (control examinations), and periodically during employment, according to the date specified by the doctor (periodic examinations). The employer is obliged to issue a referral, and the employee must complete the examination before starting work.

What Documents to Bring for Pre-Employment or Periodic Examinations?
For pre-employment or periodic occupational health examinations, you should bring:
- referral from your employer,
- ID card,
- medical documentation (if applicable), e.g., results of previous examinations,
- glasses or contact lenses if used daily,
- driving license (if the examination concerns a driver’s position).
Do I Need to Be Fasting Before Work-Related Examinations?
Not always — it depends on the type of examination. In many cases it is not necessary, but if your occupational health examination includes a morphology test, glucose level, cholesterol, or other blood tests, it is best to come fasting:
- minimum 8–12 hours without eating,
- you may drink still water as needed, and in hot weather at least 1 liter,
- avoid coffee, tea, and sugary drinks before the examination.
If you are unsure, ask during registration. The scope of examinations may vary depending on the position and the employer’s referral.
How Much Do Occupational Health Examinations Cost and Who Pays for Them?
The cost of examinations varies and depends on their type. Prices are provided for each of them during online booking, and you can also ask about them during telephone registration.
According to the Labour Code, the employer covers the full cost of employees’ medical examinations, regardless of whether they are pre-employment, periodic, or control examinations.
How Long Are Work-Related Medical Examinations Valid?
The validity of occupational health examinations depends on the doctor’s decision and the job position. There is no single fixed date for everyone — the occupational medicine doctor sets the date of the next examination individually, taking into account:
- type of work performed,
- harmful or hazardous factors in the workplace,
- employee’s health condition.
Most common validity periods:
- up to one year or less in special cases (e.g., people newly diagnosed during examination with occupational medicine with diabetes, hypertension, or other untreated or insufficiently treated health issues),
- 1–2 years — work in harmful or hazardous conditions (e.g., noise, working at heights),
- 3–5 years — office jobs and others without harmful exposures that under regulations allow for longer periodic examination intervals.
How Long Does an Appointment with an Occupational Health Doctor Take and When Will I Receive the Certificate?
An appointment with an occupational health doctor usually lasts 10–20 minutes, but it may take longer if the scope of examinations is broader (e.g., additional consultations such as ophthalmologist, neurologist, audiogram, etc., are needed).
A fitness-for-work certificate is most often issued on the same day, immediately after completing all required examinations and consultations.
Can I Refuse to Undergo Medical Examinations for Work?
Yes, but this would result in the inability to sign an employment contract with the employer (pre-employment examination) or to continue employment (periodic examination), because occupational health examinations are required by the Labour Code as a condition for starting and continuing work.
